Human beings can always be relied on to assert, with vigor, their given right to be stupid.
Keeping the pattern visible underneath everything, I think actually distracted from the piece. By giving everything the same texture, it just kind of looks 'blah'. You could have kept the figure and the frame as is, then just cut out the rest of the background and filled it in with muted/neutral colors to make it recede so the figure would have stood out more.
I think next time you should really take advantage of some of the photoshop tools to streamline the designs. Having only certain elements precisely measured, then keeping the circle/halo and left corner sloppy is really distracting.
I'm sure your friend will like her piece though, it's really nice.

Here's exactly what I think.
Perfect, I don't find the background distracting at all infact I like that you can see it thru everything, it gives it that REAL feel, not just manipulated which you see far too often even I have been so guilty of such so I applaud you for that! It ties everything together with just the right balance. Prescise...meh never been a fan of that either, I like that its not PERFECT in EVERY aspect to me that alone makes this PERFECT to me. It shows alot of heart and care was placed into it all by hand.... to hell with perfect, I love it the way it is. The bolder colors appeal to me they make her stand out all the more, Mea is very softly muted as it is, to mute the colors would lose that high contrast that is there now that makes her really pop. Further more I love the controlled shading, its not all over general shading, but only in certain areas, something you never see its all or nothing with most art. Everything here to me is perfection, it reflects the heart and the artist just as one's art should while at the same time capturing my essence so very well, if I didn't know any better I'd say you've been observing me

Artists hold their own unique style, it should be praised, never shunned or looked down upon. Expression bleeds through all art and if you "listen" carefully it speaks from the heart of artists
It may seem 'harsh' to you, but having spoke more about my input with SP over AIM, she immediately agreed with the two points I brought up. This is what real artists do, they know how to both give and receive constructive critique.
